NELSON RETURNS!
In November 2016, the 1805 Club was awarded a substantial grant by the Chancellor of the Exchequer under the LIBOR scheme for six significant Naval History projects, including the preservation of the parish register containing Lord Nelson’s marriage certificate on Nevis. Additional funds were raised to make a replica of Nelson’s Captain’s uniform and tricorn hat, as well as a climate controlled display case.
The NHCS and the 1805 Club are delighted to share that the return of the conserved St John’s Figtree Parish register (1729-1825) and the delivery of the replica uniform and hat will take place with official ceremonies in Nevis in March 2025. The Royal Navy will also be participating, with offshore patrol vessel, HMS Medway supporting the ceremonies. While the original register will remain property of St John's Figtree Church, a facsimile, the uniform and hat will be on full display in the new Nevis Maritime Museum.

ACTIVITIES & EVENTS
Our activities and events provide opportunities for networking, camaraderie and learning, as well as support for the local community. Annual fundraisers include the Alexander Hamilton Scholarship Tea Party and Jumble Sale. Monthly "Meet the Artist" events bring members and the general public together to showcase local artists and artisans, and other popular events include the end-of-year Members Mixer, History & Heritage month, and the Holiday Fair. Visiting scholars enthral during our Public Lecture series, and we hope to resume our popular Movie Nights with footage from the Archives. Our Conservation and Biodiversity Committee spearheads activities for Arbour Month and Community Trea Planting days, and among our most impactful activities are the International Coastal Cleanup, Earth Day 'Clean Island Sweep', and most recently World Ocean Day Cleanup.
With support from with our technical and financial partners, the NHCS has hosted events such as "Tim & the Space Cadets" children's musical concert; 'Imagine Nevis' and 'A Day of Visioning the Future You Want' workshop with guest speaker Dr Claire Nelson; the 30th Congress of the International Association of Caribbean Archaeologists (IACA); and the Bath Hotel Open Days to showcase our ongoing AFCP-funded historic preservation project.
For more information on past Activities and Events, you can read and download our Newsletters. You don't have to be a member to participate or get involved, but we do hope that you will join once you have!

ALEXANDER HAMILTON SCHOLARSHIP
Established in 1965 by the Trott family, the scholarship awards deserving students in Nevis with a bursary for uniforms, fees, books and other supplies. In return, the Alexander Hamilton scholars get involved with the Society’s numerous activities through volunteerism. The NHCS holds an annual Tea Party fundraiser, but donations can be made to the scholarship fund all year around via PayPal or in person at our office in Charlestown.
2025 scholarship recipients are: D’Vanjai Bartlette, Excellence Nisbett, T’Sura Francis, Tricshel Batson, Cory Liburd, Abi Daniel, Ticar’J Maynard, Somero Authurton, and Anissa Henry.
MEET THE ARTIST
Started in 2019 to coincide with the opening of the new Museum Gift Shop, this popular event takes place on the last Tuesday of the month, and showcases the work of various artists, authors and and craftspersons. Traditionally held in the tourism High Season (October to April), we soon hope to extend them to monthly throughout the year. Every event is open to the public, with complimentary light refreshments. Are you an artist who would like to be featured? Or would you like to volunteer to assist with either the planning, setup or with refreshment donations? If so, please get in touch!

COASTAL CLEANUPS
The NHCS has been conducting island-wide Coastal Cleanups every year since 1992! Stalwart member Miriam Knorr has also coordinated the Clean Island Sweep for Earth Day every year since 2003. Recently the NHCS has benefitted from the generous support of Ocean Conservancy and partnership with Blue Conscience. Locally, the initiative is supported by the Ministry of Health and the Nevis Solid Waste Management Authority.

international conference
From 14-17 August 2024, the NHCS proudly hosted the International Association for Caribbean Archaeology (IACA-AIAC)'s 30th bi-annual Congress in partnership with Western University and the Nevis Island Administration. The theme for the Congress was "The Many Faces Shaping Caribbean Archaeology" and we were particularly excited to welcome special Keynote Speakers to talk about archaeological research in the region and coming to terms with decolonisation, community engagement, and capacity building from regional and global perspectives.
